Leaders of South Western states recently rose from a conference to unanimously push for a return to regionalism based on the 1963 Constitution, followed by the leadership of Ohaneze Ndigbo.
An elder statesman from the northern part of Nigeria, Alhaji TANKO YAKASSAI has also endorsed the call for Nigeria to return to regionalism as the panacea for the growing agitations in the country.
However; Alhaji YAKASSAI said going back to the 1963 Constitution should be based on four regions, and not six geopolitical zones being advocated in some quarters.
The elder statesman noted that the proliferation of states in Nigeria has been sucking up revenue that would have used for redevelopment to run multiple bureaucracies.
Alhaji TANKO YAKASSAI, who was speaking during a live television interview monitored in Port Harcourt, recommended that whatever is to be adopted finally should be put into writing and endorsed by all parties.
On the issue of resources control as an alternative to restructuring, Alhaji YAKASSAI noted that there was everything wrong for littoral states to want more share of revenue from crude oil mined from Nigeria’s territorial waters
