Lawyer Faults Supreme Court’s Silence on Rivers State Emergency Rule

Human rights lawyer, Higher King, has expressed disappointment over the Supreme Court’s silence on the suits challenging the declaration of a State of Emergency and the suspension of democratic institutions in Rivers State.

Speaking during an appearance on Rhythm News, King said a pronouncement by the Apex Court would have served as a reference point for handling similar situations in the future. He faulted the judiciary at all levels for what he described as a collective silence during the period of emergency rule.

On calls for the probe of the outgone sole administrator of Rivers State, retired Vice Admiral Ibok Ete-Ibas, the lawyer said there was nothing wrong with investigating his stewardship.

King also dismissed insinuations that Nigeria’s constitution was suspended during the emergency period, maintaining that the framework of the law remained in place.
