Labour Party candidates are protesting against the conduct of the re-run state and federal legislative elections in Rivers State.

The Labour Party candidates, who are mainly drawn from Asari-Toru and Akuku-Toru local government areas, said they disapprove of what they described as ostrich game played by the Independent National Electoral Commission. The aggrieved Labour Party candidates said INEC appeared to have deliberately covered its head in shameful and dirty political sand and consequently neglected or refused to perform its duties without fear or favour.
The group wandered why INEC always finds it convenient to call for fresh re-run each time elections are marred by violence and killings, instead of wielding the big-stick against the perpetrators of violence and anarchy who are often well known. The Labour Party chieftains disclosed in a statement that it was disheartening that INEC had failed to initiate proceedings to disqualify candidates of the two main political parties that have held Rivers State to ransom.
The Labour Party candidates also threatened to withdraw from further participation in what they described as an endless charade of elections, except INEC initiate moves to punish candidates of other parties that sponsor violence and acts of electoral malpractice. The group also demands that INEC should refund all expenses incurred by its members during the last two failed elections in Rivers State, as well as compensate them monetarily for the time wasted.
They also placed on record that INEC omitted the name of a major political in the result sheet for Asari-Toru Local Government Area. The Labour Party candidates promised to initiate legal action against INEC in a bid to seek redress in court, if the electoral umpire failed to do the right thing as statutorily required of it.
