Justice SIMEON AMADI of the Rivers State High Court sitting in Port Harcourt has dismissed a suit filed by former governor, ROTIMI CHIBUIKE AMAECHI, seeking to stop the panel set up by Governor NYESOM WIKE to investigate his administration.
In his ruling, Justice AMADI said the panel led by Justice GEORGE OMERIJI was not meant to investigate the personal activities of the former governor but actions taken by the state government under his leadership that affect the people.
Justice AMADI said no one can stop a panel that was set up based on the provision of the constitution, adding that the AMAECHI’s concern about not being given fair hearing cannot apply at this stage. The Judge declared that the panel would have to work in line with its terms of reference and come up with a report in the next thirty days.
Reacting to the ruling, the counsel to AMAECHI, WINIFRED ENYINNAYA said they will appeal the ruling. The Rivers State Attorney General and Commissioner of Justice, EMMANUEL AGUMA, has assured that the panel would be fair to all parties.
AGUMA was quoted in a report saying that the ruling meant that the Judicial Commission of Inquiry has a legitimate assignment that cannot be stopped by a claimant.
