IBORI’s release followed a court order by the trail judge JULIET MAY of Royal Court of Justice, Queens Court one in London.
Spokesman to IBORI, TONY ELUEMUNOR who confirmed the development to newsmen described it as a major victory against the British Home Office.
Reports say Counsels to the Home Office wanted JAMES IBORI to remain in detention after he had served his jail term, on the grounds that his confiscation hearing had not been concluded.
According to a statement by ELUEMUNOR, IBORI’s lawyers exposed the injustice in the indefinite detention.
The statement read that the lawyers told the Judge that there were no grounds in law under which their client could be detained stressing that his detention for even one day by the Home office was unlawful.
The statement claimed that the move triggered a high drama in the British High Court, as senior lawyers for the UK’s Home Office failed in their last minute bid to prevent IBORI’s release.
The statement further accused the British Home Secretary of being behind the plan to retain IBORI custody.
JAMES IBORI was sentenced to thirteen years imprisonment in 2012.
