International Day of Persons with Disabilities: Rivers PWD Community Calls for Greater Inclusion

Today marks the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, a global observance dedicated to promoting the rights and well-being of people living with disabilities.

The theme for this year’s celebration is “Fostering Disability-Inclusive Societies for Advancing Social Progress.” The 2025 commemoration builds on the momentum of the Second World Summit for Social Development, held in Doha from November 4 to 6, where world leaders renewed commitments to inclusive development.

In Rivers State, the Joint National Association of Persons with Disabilities (JONAPWD) is calling for improved inclusion in governance and public affairs.

Chairman of the association, Collins Akpana, told our reporter Favour Zimoni that persons with disabilities are still not adequately represented at both state and local government levels.

Also speaking, the Public Relations Officer of JONAPWD in Rivers State, Brown Benjamin, urged members of the disability community to look beyond their challenges and continue to pursue self-development while advocating for a more inclusive society.
