FIFA President Gianni Infantino has initiated moves for an independent review of the organisation’s governance framework following criticism from member associations, leagues and fan groups.
The development comes amid concerns over recent administrative decisions and congestion in the international football calendar, which have attracted criticism from stakeholders across the game.
In a letter to the FIFA Council and presidents of the organisation’s 211 member associations, Infantino said he would ask the Council whether it wished to commission an independent external review of FIFA’s current governance framework for major strategic initiatives and recommend possible improvements.
Infantino also clarified that a previously proposed model had not been approved and had since been withdrawn.
He said the proposal was subject to approval by the FIFA Council and member associations, adding that decisions had not been taken as had been suggested.
The FIFA president said the governance review would provide an opportunity for stakeholders to present their views, while stressing that member associations would not face different treatment based on their positions on institutional proposals.
The proposed review is expected to examine FIFA’s operational policies and decision-making procedures as the governing body seeks to address concerns raised by stakeholders ahead of upcoming congresses.
