The Edo State Resident Electoral Commissioner (REC), Prof. Anugbom Onuoha, says many of the criticisms Nigerians direct at the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) are actually the result of failures by political parties to fulfil their responsibilities.
Prof. Onuoha, an indigene of Rumuepirikom in Obio/Akpor LGA, told our reporter, Emelda Ifeme, that most political parties lack the will to conduct transparent and credible primary elections, yet expect INEC to “clean up the mess” created by their internal shortcomings. He noted that parties often neglect their core duties and later shift blame to the electoral body.
He maintained that INEC has consistently delivered fair, credible, and transparent elections, adding that outcomes in some state-level polls—where a single party sweeps all seats—raise more questions about party practices than INEC’s performance.
On the ongoing voter registration exercise, the Edo REC urged all eligible Nigerians to present themselves for registration and actively participate in the electioneering process, stressing that democracy thrives when citizens engage fully.
