The Chairman of Ikwerre Local Government Area, Charles Wobodo, has called on cattle owners and dealers to create a designated settlement area for their livestock to curb the destruction of farmlands across the LGA.
Wobodo made the appeal on Tuesday when members of the National Association of Cattle Dealers, Processors, and Marketers of Nigeria paid him a courtesy visit at the council headquarters in Isiokpo.
He said the constant movement of cattle from place to place has led to repeated damage to farmers’ crops, stressing that the best solution is for herders to organize themselves and establish a cattle ranch within a controlled environment.
The chairman added that the council will soon hold further engagements involving security agencies, CDCs, traditional rulers, and community representatives to develop a lasting solution to the recurring issue.
Wobodo also urged cattle rearers to reach out to the owners of the livestock and inform them of the council’s plan to meet with relevant stakeholders to end the practice of grazing on people’s farmlands.
