This follows a petition filed by the Socio-Economic Rights and Accountability Project, signed by its Deputy Director, Kolawole Oluwadare which highlighted the trauma, caused by depriving children their rights to education.
According to the statement, the investigation is set to begin after the Prosecutor gets authorization from the Pre-Trial Chamber of the court that will focus on the persistent failure of Nigerian government to bring an end to the abductions.
SERAP had sent in the petition in September 2021 to the ICC prosecutor, Karim Khan, and received a response from the Head of the Information and Evidence Unit, Mark P. Dillon, on behalf of the ICC Prosecutor.
The ICC prosecutor explained that it has taken a step toward ensuring that those suspected to be responsible for crimes against Nigerian schoolchildren are exposed, and prosecuted.
