The management of the Ignatius Ajuru University of Education, IAUE, Rumuolumeni, Port Harcourt, Rivers State, has dismissed reports of a cult clash or related violent activity on the campus during the institution’s Students’ Week activities.
In a statement, the university’s Public Relations Officer, Ngozi Okiridu, said operatives of the Nigeria Police Force were deployed to the campus for crowd control and to ensure the safety of students.
She explained that the deployment was part of the university’s security measures, given the history of hoodlums attempting to take advantage of large gatherings to cause violence and attacks.
According to the statement, law and order were maintained throughout the day, while firearms were only considered as a last resort in situations where the lives of students were assessed to be at risk.
The management also said no casualties were recorded, stressing that no student or other person was killed or injured during the activities.
However, accounts surrounding the incident remain contradictory, with the position of the university management differing from that of the institution’s Students’ Union Government President and the Rivers State Police Command.
The conflicting accounts have raised questions over what exactly transpired during the Students’ Week activities and the circumstances surrounding the reported security intervention.
