Reports say Hurricane Matthew made landfall as a Category Four storm, with winds of up to two hundred and thirty kilomtres per hour.
It also triggered heavy rainfall and dangerous storm surges that have led to a number of deaths in Haiti and the nearby Dominican Republic.
A bridge linking southern Haiti to the capital, Port-au-Prince has collapsed, as the hurricane moved towards the north-eastern coast of Cuba.
Warnings have been raised in the US state of Florida, which is also on the part of the Caribbean hurricane.
Meanwhile; two people are known to have died in Haiti and four in the Dominican Republic, with the death toll expected to rise as authorities assess the extent of the damage.
