Some cattle dealers and butchers complained that the exchange rate and the high cost of diesel, coupled with bad roads are a major challenge facing their industry.

Chairman of Agip slaughter, Lukman Ibrahim in an exclusive interview with Today FM’s Olawale Sanusi said the situation has worsened since the removal of fuel subsidy as the transportation of cattle down to Rivers state from the north, cost as much as one point four million naira per trip excluding the exorbitant amount paid to purchase the cattle.

Speaking on the military takeover in Niger Republic and the looming negative effect sanctions from the Economic Community of West African States and Nigerian government will have on Niger and cattle sales, Ibrahim said there is no cause for alarm as Cameroun and Chad are a major suppliers of cattle to Nigeria.

On his part the chairman of aka slaughter in Iwofe community, Abass Adebayo complained that apart from the high cost of diesel contributing to the cost of cattle, the Nigerian police is another problem.

He alleged that they charged as much as ten thousand to fifty thousand naira per checking point in order to allow their trucks pass.
