A group under the aegis of the Initiative for Transparent Strategy and Good Leadership has alleged plans by local government authorities in Rivers State to sack about 21,000 workers from September 2026.
Spokesperson of the group, C.C.E. Obujunwo, claimed the planned sack followed a recent biometric exercise conducted by the Rivers State Local Government Service Commission.
The group alleged that the decision was reached at a meeting attended by local government chairmen, heads of local government administration, treasurers and members of the Local Government Service Commission.
It further claimed that affected workers would receive their August salaries but would subsequently be informed that their appointments were illegal.
The group alleged that the planned reduction would bring the total workforce of the state’s local government areas to about 13,000.
It accused authorities of using the exercise to raise funds ahead of the 2027 general elections and called for the immediate reversal of the alleged sack.
The group also urged the Nigeria Union of Local Government Employees, NULGE, to take action over the development, warning its leadership to step aside if it fails to protect affected workers.
