The move disclosed by the German Ambassador in Niamey is intended to help reinforce security in the Sahel region.
Ambassador BERND VON MUNCHOW-POHL said part of the mission of the base will be to support the efforts of the United Nations peacekeeping mission in Mali.
The announcement comes a week ahead of a visit to Niger by German Chancellor ANGELA MERKEL.
The United States and France already operate military bases in Niger as part of the battle against jihadists in the Sahel region, mainly in Libya and Mali.
