Four political parties in Rivers State have signed a peace accord ahead of the August 30 local government elections. Out of about nineteen registered political parties in the state, the All Progressives Congress (APC), Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), Social Democratic Party (SDP), and Labour Party agreed to commit to a peaceful electoral process.
At the signing ceremony, Chairman of the Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC), Dr. Micheal Odey, urged the parties not to approach the election as a do-or-die affair. He warned that RSIEC would take legal action against any individual or group that violates the peace agreement.
The Commissioner of Police in Rivers State, Olugbenga Adepoju, assured that adequate security will be provided before and during the polls. Representatives of the four political parties pledged to conduct themselves peacefully throughout the election period.
