The State Governor, AYODELE FAYOSE, had on signing the new law, threatened that cows found grazing in farmland would be arrested and slaughtered.
A new body known as Ekiti Grazing Enforcement Marshals, which is a vigilance task force, is responsible for enforcing the directive.
But the umbrella body of the cattle herders, which is known as Miyetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, is not comfortable with Governor FAYOSE’s threat.
Spokesman for the group, BABA OTHMAN NGELZARMA said in a statement that the Ekiti State vigilance group has already killed five cows since the government order came into force.
NGELZARMA maintained that their members are Nigerian citizens who should enjoy all the constitutionally guaranteed rights, just as he emphasized that Ekiti State was not an island but a constituent part of the Federal Republic of Nigeria.
The Meyeti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria called on Governor FAYOSE to offer an unreserved apology for the slaughter of cows owned by its members.
