The President of the Niger Delta Integrated Farmers Association of Nigeria, Julius Openha-Wodah, has backed the Federal Government’s plan to establish state-specific livestock development centres across the country.
Speaking in an interview with Today FM’s Olawale Sanusi, Openha-Wodah described the initiative as one of the best policies of the Bola Tinubu administration, saying it could boost livestock production, create jobs, develop markets and strengthen food security. He said Rivers State could benefit significantly if the programme is properly implemented.
Openha-Wodah said the initiative could help increase the livestock sector’s contribution to Nigeria’s economy from 32 billion dollars to at least 74 billion dollars by 2035. He also distinguished the policy from the Rural Grazing Area, RUGA, programme of the former Muhammadu Buhari administration, explaining that opposition from Nyesom Wike and other South-South governors was based on concerns over its implementation, while the current initiative is more organised.
