Human rights lawyer, Femi Falana, has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to take tougher action against political parties and politicians engaging in early campaigns ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Falana, a Senior Advocate of Nigeria (SAN), described the trend of politicians openly campaigning long before the official timetable as “abnormal and unlawful,” stressing that it undermines the electoral process and distracts from governance.
He urged INEC not only to issue warnings but to prosecute violators in accordance with the Electoral Act, noting that such actions would serve as a deterrent to others. According to him, allowing early campaigns to go unchecked encourages impunity and weakens democratic institutions.
The lawyer also cautioned political actors to respect electoral guidelines and focus on addressing the pressing social and economic challenges confronting Nigerians rather than engaging in premature political activities.
Falana’s intervention comes amid growing concerns over the increasing visibility of political campaigns across the country, despite the fact that INEC is yet to release the official timetable for the 2027 elections.
