A former President of the Movement for the Survival of the Ogoni People (MOSOP), Legborsi Pyagbara, has criticized the Hydrocarbon Pollution Remediation Project (HYPREP), saying it is no longer serving the purpose for which it was created.
Speaking at a media parley, Pyagbara accused the Federal Government of hijacking the structures of HYPREP and turning it into a platform for political settlement. He lamented that the current board of the agency lacks transparency and accountability.
The former MOSOP leader, who is also the Executive Director of the African Foundation for Energy and Sustainable Development, further alleged that the people of Ogoni have been stripped of their powers to nominate executive members of HYPREP, a development he described as contrary to the spirit of the project.
Pyagbara called for urgent reforms to restore the credibility of HYPREP and ensure that the interests of the Ogoni people are prioritized in the environmental remediation efforts.
