Ex-Lawmaker Nkoyo Toyo Links ‘Japa’ Syndrome to Rising Unemployment in Naigeria

Former Member of the House of Representatives, Nkoyo Toyo, has attributed the increasing wave of migration, popularly known as the “Japa” syndrome, to the lack of employment opportunities in Nigeria.

Toyo, who previously represented the Calabar Odukpani Federal Constituency of Cross River State, said the country’s economic realities have pushed many young Nigerians to seek greener pastures abroad.

Speaking on the trend, she recalled that in the 1980s, university graduates often secured jobs almost immediately after leaving school. She noted that this was in sharp contrast to the present situation where many graduates face prolonged periods of unemployment, underemployment, or unstable work conditions.

The former lawmaker emphasized that addressing the root causes of unemployment and creating viable opportunities for young people is critical to stemming the tide of mass migration.
