Ethiopian Man Faces Multiple War Crimes Trial Before International Criminal Court

ESHETU ALEMU is accused of ordering the execution of seventy-five people in a church during the bloody purges in Ethiopia in the late nineteen seventies.
The sixty-three-year-old former aide to the exiled dictator MENGISTU HAILE MARIAM is also accused of torture and inhumane treatment.
His alleged crimes include tying prisoners up, suspending them in mid-air and beating their bare feet with sticks.
It is expected that some of the alleged victims of what became known as the “Red Terror” will share their experiences in court over the next two weeks with the hope of seeing long-awaited justice done.
ALEMU had hoped to escape the charges by going into exile in Europe, despite being sentenced to death in his back at home.
