Etche Local Government Raises Alarm Over Rising Farmer-Herder Conflicts

The Administrator of Etche Local Government Area, Dr. Onyenanchi Nwankor, has expressed strong concern over the increasing invasion of farmlands by cattle herders, the destruction of farm produce, and retaliatory attacks by herders and local residents. He made the remarks during a crucial meeting held at the Nigerian Police Divisional Headquarters in Okehi, with the aim of addressing the escalating crisis.

During the meeting, Dr. Nwankor emphasized that the administration would not tolerate any individual or group using their livelihood activities as a cover to cause chaos within the community. He assured that the Rivers State government is fully aware of the ongoing issues and will be kept informed of the outcomes of the discussions between cattle rearers and farmers.

The gathering was attended by key stakeholders, including representatives from the Mieteetti Allah Cattle Breeders Association of Nigeria, led by Alhaji Yau Mogodi; Chief Godspower Amadi Eke, the Rivers State chapter chairman of the Cattle Dealers, Processors, and Marketers of Nigeria; the Okehi Divisional Police Officer; and the President General of Ogbakor Etche.

The meeting aimed to foster dialogue and seek sustainable solutions to the farmer-herder clashes that have recently threatened peace and security in the area. Authorities reiterated their commitment to ensuring peaceful coexistence and urged all parties to work collaboratively towards restoring tranquility in Etche.
