The trial of the former Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN), Godwin Emefiele, on allegations of fraud has suffered a major setback following a disagreement between parties over the forensic examination of a mobile phone and WhatsApp chats tendered as evidence in court.
At the resumed hearing before Justice Rahman Oshodi of the Special Offences Division of the Lagos High Court in Ikeja, counsel to the first defendant, Olalekan Ojo (SAN), informed the court that the earlier order for a joint forensic analysis of the mobile device, tagged “iPhone 2,” could not be executed.
Ojo accused the Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) of deliberately obstructing the process, preventing the agreed examination of the phone and its contents.
The defence counsel urged the court to intervene, insisting that the EFCC’s conduct was frustrating efforts to ensure transparency and fairness in the handling of evidence.
Justice Oshodi adjourned the matter to a later date for further hearing, as the disagreement over the forensic procedure continues to stall progress in the trial.
