Three other police officers were injured in the attack, which happened several hundred metres from the entrance to Saint Catherine’s church.
The so-called Islamic State group said its fighters carried out the attack on the church located at the foot of Mount Sinai.
It may interest you to note that St Catherine’s is one of the oldest Christian monasteries in the world and is marked as a UNESCO world heritage site.
The latest attack comes days after bombings at two Coptic Christian churches left forty-five people dead and subjected the worshippers to a low-key celebration of Easter.
