The English Football League has confirmed that the EFL Championship play-offs will be expanded from four to six teams starting from next season.
Under the new format, teams finishing between third and eighth position will compete in the post-season play-offs for a chance to secure promotion to the Premier League.
Supporters of the change say it will increase competition towards the end of the Championship campaign by keeping more teams in contention for promotion.
Meanwhile, the National League (England) currently operates a six-team play-off system, where teams finishing second and third advance directly to the semi-finals, while clubs placed fourth to seventh compete in the quarter-finals.
