ECOWAS Court Fines Nigerian Govt $3.3m

 
 The fine was imposed on Nigeria over the extra-judicial killing of eight citizens within the Apo District of Abuja in September, 2013.
 
 The security operatives had opened fire, killing eight persons who were mistaken for Boko Haram terrorist but who turned out to be commercial motorcycle operator who were squatting in the uncompleted building.
 
 The regional court also ordered the Nigerian Government to pay compensatory damages of two hundred thousand dollars to each of the family of the deceased.
 
 Addition one hundred and fifty thousand dollars is to be paid to each of the persons injured during a raid by a combined team of soldiers and operatives of the Department of State Service of an uncompleted building at Apo Area of Abuja.

The ECOWAS Court presided over by Justice CHIJIOKE NWOKE found the Nigeria authorities guilty of brutal killing of defenseless citizens, contrary to the provision of local and international law on the fundamental rights of citizens to life.
 
 The judgment was delivered based on a case filed by a nongovernmental organization known as the Incorporated Trustees of Fiscal and Civil Right Enlightment Foundation, on behalf of families of the deceased.
