Defendants’ absence stalls hearing on oil theft case involving 26 foreigners

Today FM’s Uchendu Ejiowhor reports that the matter was supposed to commence yesterday after the defendants took their pleas at the last adjourned date

The case has now been adjourned till the 20th of January 2023.

You may recall that the presiding Judge, Justice Muhammed Turaki after the plea taking had ruled that the defendants be remanded on board their vessel but be allowed access to their medicals.

The suspects who are from India, Sri Lanka, Philippines and Poland were charged alongside MT Heroic Idun vessel on a three count charge of conspiracy, false pretence to become victims of maritime offences in order to evade arrest by Navy ship Gongola and attempt to deal unlawfully in crude oil within Nigerian exclusive economic zone.
