The Committee on the Review of the Joint Defence Doctrine 2017 has visited the Headquarters of the 6 Division, Nigerian Army, Port Harcourt Barracks, Rivers State, as part of efforts to develop an updated doctrine that reflects Nigeria’s evolving security landscape and current operational realities.
The delegation, led by the Chairman of the Committee, Major General Ademola Adedoja, held consultations with commanders and senior officers of the Division to gather professional inputs for the 2026 Joint Defence Doctrine.
Speaking during the visit, Major General Adedoja said the review committee was established to periodically update the Armed Forces of Nigeria’s guiding doctrinal document. He noted that the Chief of Defence Staff directed the current review to ensure the doctrine remains relevant to emerging security challenges and modern military operations.
According to him, the review is aimed at aligning the doctrine with prevailing security realities across the country’s various theatres of operation through extensive consultations with military formations and other stakeholders.
A statement by the Acting Deputy Director, 6 Division Nigerian Army Public Relations, Lieutenant Colonel Umar Adam, said the committee noted that previous attempts to review the doctrine in 2022 and 2025 were not concluded, necessitating the commencement of the current exercise in the first week of June 2026.
The statement added that the review is focusing on key areas including logistics, command and control, technology, emerging threats, future warfare and inter-agency cooperation.
Major General Adedoja stressed the importance of broad-based consultations, describing them as essential to producing an inclusive doctrine rooted in practical operational experience. He encouraged commanders and staff officers of the 6 Division, as well as affiliated formations and units, to make meaningful contributions, assuring them that all submissions would receive due consideration.
Welcoming the delegation, the General Officer Commanding 6 Division Nigerian Army and Land Component Commander, Joint Task Force (South-South), Operation DELTA SAFE, Major General Emmanuel Emekah, represented by the Chief of Staff, Brigadier General Emmanuel Adamu, reaffirmed the Division’s commitment to supporting the review process with operational insights that would strengthen the 2026 Joint Defence Doctrine.
