Dec 10 Rerun: Rivers State Commission of Inquiry commence sitting.

In his opening statement; the Chairman of the Commission, Justice CHIWENDU NWOGU declared that their mission was not to witch-hunt, but to unravel the immediate and remote causes of the violence during the legislative election.

Justice NWOGU also said the Commission would seek to identify the perpetrators of violence during the polls.

The Chairman further noted that the Judicial Commission would not follow strict rules of evidence but shall adopt procedures that would ensure fairness to all parties.

Meanwhile, Rivers State Commissioner for Urban Development, CHINYERE IGWE has told the Judicial Commission of Inquiry how he was allegedly brutalized by the police at the Rivers East Senatorial District Collation Centre for the rerun election last December.

Responding to questions under cross-examination before members of the Commission, IGWE accused a chieftain of the APC and former Caretaker Chairman of Port Harcourt City Local Government Council, NNAMDI NUCHE, of instigating the police to have him.

IGWE further claimed that he was beaten up during the collation exercise at the PHALGA council secretariat by policemen allegedly led by the Commander of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad, AKIN FAKOREDE.

The Commissioner for Urban Development said he did not commit any offence, adding that he was only doing his job as the Collation Agent of PDP when the alleged incident happened.

He said what was found in his possession was the original results declared for Emohua Local Government Area, adding that he was later granted bail by the police based on self-recognition.
