A coalition of civil society organisations has condemned the alleged assault on a young girl by the Chairman of Ahoada West Local Government Area, Eugene Epelle.
At a joint media briefing, the coalition expressed concern that the perpetrators and others are allegedly still threatening the victim, describing the development as disturbing and unacceptable.
The position of the coalition was contained in a joint statement signed by Dornuwile Apenu for Olegh Centre, Chetam Nwala for Chelarry Attorneys, Gift Meelubari for Voices for Change, Dr. Ekpere Edegbuo for Social Development Integrated Center, Ejit Josiah for Rights Advocacy and Development Center, and Kentebe Ebiaridor for Environmental Rights Action.
In his remarks, Green Isaac of Relief Human Rights Clinic and Civil Society Coalition described the incident, which reportedly occurred on Sunday, March 1, as unacceptable and a violation of the victim’s rights.
Green Isaac disclosed that the coalition has resolved to write to the Commissioner of Police to demand a thorough investigation, as well as the arrest and prosecution of the Ahoada West council boss and others allegedly involved in the assault.
Also speaking, Courage Nsirimovu of the Pilex Center for Civic Education Initiative said the coalition is preparing to seek redress in court.
Earlier, the mother of the victim, Chimela Miller, narrated her account of what transpired on the day of the incident.
