Court remands former LG caretaker committee chairman in Rivers

When the defendants appeared in court for proper arraignment and plea, Sunny Bekanwa who is a lecturer at the Ken Saro-Wiwa Polytechnic and one other defendant, pleaded not guilty to the seven count charges which was read in parts.

In count one, four, five, six and seven, Sunny Bekanwa is alleged to have committed felony to commit murder, belonging to Iceland cult, sponsorship of cult group and participating in the activities of Iceland cult group which led to the killing of two Ogoni prominent sons, identified as Doctor Lucky Keena and Engineer Deyaa Dunsara in Kpean community.

In count two, and three, Henry Barikui-Dele and others were alleged to have on the 24th of November, 2014, unlawfully killed Doctor Lucky Keena and Engineer Deyaa Dunsara in Kpean community.

The trial Judge, Justice Chigozi Igwe after listening to arguments on the bail application from counsels representing the parties, deferred the bail application, and ordered that the accused be remanded in Port Harcourt Correctional Center before adjourning till 16th and 24th of January, 7th and 26th of February, 2024.

It would interest you to know that Sunny Bekanwa had approached a Magistrate Court sitting in Port Harcourt and a State High Court sitting in Sakpenwo to seek for bail, despite information filed before Justice Chigozi Igwe where four other defendants are already standing trial on the same offense.
