Court award N6M damages against Rivers State Police Command over unlawful arrest, illegal detention Man.

Justice GEORGE OMEREJI held that the police violated the fundamental rights of UDUAK ANIETE by detaining her because of a crime allegedly committed by her son.

The trial judge said the decision of the court should be brought to the attention of the Commissioner of Police so that disciplinary action would be taken against the police officers arrested the woman.

Speaking with newsmen after the ruling, counsel to UDUAK ANIETE, CHRISTIAN NJIGWUM expressed the hope that the decision of the court would serve as a deterrent to overzealous police officers. 

Our correspondent reports that UDUAK ANIETE approached the court to challenge the violation of her fundamental human rights by police officers at Rumukpakani Police Station for a crime allegedly committed by her son.
