Our correspondent CHINEDU IWUNNA reports that the protesters under the banner of Eleme Youth Council earlier today blocked the major, thereby worsening the traffic congestion that has been witnessed in the area since the bridge caved in yesterday.
Many commuters were left stranded due to the development, while vehicle that were caught up in the protest spent many hours in the traffic bottleneck.
The protest leaders told newsmen that they decided to block the road to reduce pressure on the other lane of the dual carriage way, which could force the remaining bridge to collapse.
They demanded for government to take immediate steps to repair the collapse bridge and ease the difficulty being experienced by motorists and commuters plying the Eleme axis of the East West Road.
The Eleme protesters threatened to sustain the protest until their demands are met, which could further compound the difficulty for travelers on the East West Road that connects Ogoni communities in Rivers State, as well as Akwa Ibom and Cross River States.
