Civil Society Organizations (CSOs) in Rivers State have issued a strong condemnation of the Sole Administrator of Rivers State, retired Vice Admiral Ibok Ete-Ibas, over allegations that he has withdrawn gratuities meant for pensioners in the state.
Addressing the issue, the South-South Youths Initiative described the alleged action as utterly unacceptable. The group’s National President, Saviour-Osar IMEABE, condemned the decision, stating that withdrawing pension gratuities at this period is “the height of insensitivity,” especially given the economic hardships faced by retirees.
Similarly, Edoo Friday-Nekabari, Coordinator of the Community Advancement Initiative, expressed outrage, describing it as inhumane for the retired Vice Admiral to stop paying pensions despite the state’s increased allocation. He emphasized that pensioners deserve respect and timely gratuity payments, especially in these challenging times.
Adding to the chorus, Solomon Lenu, the immediate past spokesperson for Civil Society Organisations in Rivers State, characterized the purported action as an affront to national labor laws, warning that such conduct undermines the dignity of retirees and breaches legal obligations.
The CSOs called on the Rivers State government and relevant authorities to urgently address the matter, ensuring that pensioners receive their rightful gratuities without further delay.
