Residents of Bonny Island have sent a desperate appeal to international oil and gas companies operating in the area to intervene in the flooding that has continued to ravage communities in the local government area.
Some affected traders and residents told our correspondent that the local government lacks the capacity to tackle the challenge and called on the multinationals and other companies to come to their rescue.
In response, the Chairman of Bonny Local Government Technical Committee on Drainage, Flood Management, and Control, Dr. Fubara Dan-Jumbo, commended the council chairman, Abinye Blessing Pepple, for setting up the committee shortly after assuming office.
A member of the committee, Alali Irimagha, said strident efforts would be made to address the “very terrible situation,” but stressed that Bonny Local Government alone cannot bear the burden.
Areas reported to be worst hit by the flooding include Abalamabie Road, Ukpo Avenue, Hospital Road, Shell Pipeline Road, and Moore Jackson Road.
