Officials said the powerful explosion happened about forty-nine miles north-east of the capital, Baghdad.
Reuters international news agency quoted hospital sources saying that the death toll was expected to rise.
A day before the latest attack, the so-called Islamic State group had claimed it carried out a suicide bomb attack on a security checkpoint in Baghdad which killed at least twenty people.
