Reports have it that up to a dozen A-29 Super Tucano aircraft would be sold to Nigeria to help fight Islamist militant group.
The US Air Force considers the A-29 aircraft as a game-changer drawing from the experience of when they were deployed in Afghanistan in 2016.
It said the aircraft can be armed with two wing-mounted machine guns and can carry up to one thousand, five hundred and fifty kilograms of weapons.
Reuters news agency quoted unnamed US officials saying the deal, which is not yet official, would require approval from Congress.
The deal, which is thought to be worth up to six hundred million US dollars, was halted by the Obama Administration on the day it was due to be sent to Congress.
The reversal was made after an incident in which a Nigerian Air Force jet mistakenly dropped a bomb on internally displaced persons camp in January, killing dozens of civilians, mainly women and children.
The Obama Administration had also in the past voiced concerns about rights abuses by the Nigerian military in the war against Boko Haram, which is party why it refused to sell the aircraft to Nigeria.
Reuters source in the US Congress confirmed that the human rights concerns remain, despite support for the sale from some lawmakers.
The unnamed US officials told Reuters that the aircraft that would be sold to Nigeria come with a very basic armed configuration.
The move to sell US aircraft to Nigeria may not be unconnected with the outcome of discussions between President MUHAMMADU BUHARI and his US counterpart, DONALD TRUMP.
Both leaders spoke on telephone while President BUHARI was in London for forty-nine days on medical vacation.
You would recall that the Presidential spokesman, FEMI ADESINA, had released a statement confirming the telephone conversation.
ADESINA noted that President BUHARI was assured by President TRUMP of US readiness to cut a new deal in helping Nigeria in terms of military weapons to combat terrorism.
