Boat owners and drivers operating along the Bonny waterways have raised concerns over alleged persistent multiple extortion by security agencies and some community actors on the route.
Some of the operators, who spoke with our correspondent, Precious Ahiakwo, said that despite the presence of security agencies such as the Police and the Navy to ensure safety, boat drivers are allegedly compelled to make repeated payments at several checkpoints.
They lamented that the multiple collections have discouraged passengers from using water transport and placed heavy financial pressure on operators. The boat drivers appealed to the Rivers State Government to urgently intervene.
