Bill seeking to create a platform for political election debate passes second reading in Senate.

Our correspondent JAMES IGAH reports that the bill seeks the establishment of the Nigerian Political Parties’ Debate Commission.

The bill was sponsored by Senator ABDULFATAI BUHARI who represents Oyo North in the Senate and enjoyed overwhelming support of senators during plenary today.

The Senators who made contributions also resolved that the debate commission should be funded through private contributions from foundations and corporations.

Once the bill becomes law, the debate commission would serve as an independent, nonprofit and non-partisan body for the promotion of debates for candidates of political parties to showcase their ideas to the Nigerian electorate.

The proposed Nigerian Political Parties’ Debate Commission would also undertake research and educational activities relating to political debates.
