Former Vice-President Atiku Abubakar has said that governors defecting from the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) to the All Progressives Congress (APC) are doing so mainly for personal political survival rather than ideological reasons.
Atiku made the remark while reacting to reports of the defection of Adamawa State Governor Ahmadu Fintiri from the PDP to the APC.
In a statement issued by his media aide, Paul Ibe, Atiku noted that every politician has the constitutional right to choose any political platform of their choice.
He, however, suggested that some of the recent defections by political office holders are driven by personal interests rather than commitment to party ideology or development-focused agendas.
The former vice-president did not directly criticise Fintiri but reiterated that political realignments are part of Nigeria’s democratic process, stressing that politicians are free to move to parties where they believe their ambitions or interests are best served.
