Justice ONNOGHEN appeared before the Nigerian Senate today for screening based on a request through a letter from Acting President, Professor YEMI OSINBAJO.
You will recall that Professor OSINBAJO’s letter to the Senate was sent following public outcry over the delay in the confirmation of Justice ONNOGHEN.
On the floor of the Senate in plenary; Justice ONNOGHEN assured of his commitment to tackle the issue of corruption in the judiciary.
Justice ONNOGHEN said litigants would no longer have to see any judge before they can be assured of justice.
He also talked about how to address the issue of conflicting judgments by courts, as well as delayed dispensation of cases, which he partly blamed on lawyers.
After the judicial enlightenment session, which was acknowledged by the Senate President, BUKOLA SARAKI, Justice WALTER ONNOGHEN was asked to take a bow and leave.
You will recall that President MUHAMMADU BUHARI appointed Justice ONNOGHEN as Acting Chief Justice of Nigeria in November last year, following the recommendation of the National Judicial Council.
That appointment elapsed after three months, and was extended based on another recommendation by the NJC after President BUHARI traveled to London on vacation without sending his name to the Senate for confirmation.
