Alleged attempts to release three members of a suspected criminal gang that was smashed by the police in Port Harcourt in November last year has become a source of major concern for the All Progressives Congress in Rivers State.State Chairman of the APC, Chief DAVIES IBIAMU-IKANYA who raised the alarm in a statement, alleged that the suspected criminals are facing sundry accusations, including killing of police and military personnel.IBIAMU IKANYA said men of the Special Anti-Robbery Squad caught the gang members with formidable weaponry belonging to slain police and army personnel on 19th of November last year. The APC Chairman said his party was shocked that right from the day the suspects were arrested and two of them charged to court, there had been intense pressure by officials of the Rivers State Government to have them released.IKANYA alleged that the state government, through the office of the Director of Public Prosecution, has finally advised against further prosecution of the suspects. He said the APC would like to draw the attention of the Inspector-General of Police, the Chief of Army Staff and the Director General of the Department of State Services to take notice of the move to free the suspect. The party warned dropping of charges against the suspected criminals will only embolden more criminals to kill and maim innocent people and residents of Rivers State.
