The Office of the Attorney-General of the Federation and Minister of Justice has clarified that no inmate approved for clemency under President Bola Tinubu’s recent exercise of the prerogative of mercy has been released from custody.
The clarification comes amid public debate following the announcement of the President’s approval of clemency for selected inmates across the country.
According to the AGF’s office, the process is still at its final administrative stage, which involves a thorough review to ensure that all names and recommendations strictly comply with established legal and procedural requirements before any release instrument is issued.
The statement further noted that the exercise of the President’s prerogative of mercy is being handled with utmost transparency and due diligence to maintain public confidence in the justice system and uphold the integrity of the process.
