This was made known by the Rivers State coordinator of the African Women’s Lawyers Association, Hilda Desmond-Ihekaire, to mark the 2022 International Widows Day.
Desmond-Ihekaire,who expressed worry over the dehumanizing situation of widows, said the problem has persisted even after the adoption of laws criminalizing such acts by states of the federation.
The AWLA coordinator who further called on the government to put measures in place to ensure that widows are given their right place in the society also stressed the need for more awareness especially in the rural areas.
The International Widows Day is commemorated on 23rd of June every year to draw attention to the plight of widows as well as create awareness on the issues of widowhood globally.
