The bill equally seeks to make it flexible for the law enforcement component to focus on the key role of arrest, investigation and prosecution of criminal cases.?
The bill is sponsored by Senator MOHAMMED HASSAN, who represents Borno South Senatorial District.
Senator HASSAN said the bill also seeks to create a system that would eliminate corruption in the handling of proceeds of crime.
The Senator noted that the absence of a civil forfeiture of law in the country makes a mockery of the ant-corruption fight.
Lending his voice to debate on the bill, the Senate Minority Leader, Senator GODSWILL AKPABIO? said there was need for comprehensive provisions for restraining, seizure, confiscation and forfeiture of proceeds of unlawful activities.
In his remarks, the Senate President, BUKOLA SARAKI, said strengthening of institutions is a good step in fighting corruption. ?
The bill was thereafter referred to the Committee on Judiciary and Human Rights, which was mandated to report back in four weeks.
