Teachers in Rivers State are threatening to embark on an industrial action following the abduction of five of their colleagues at Agba-Ndele community in Emohua Local Government Area a week ago.
You will recall that an armed gang raided Agba-Ngele Community School on Monday last week, and abducted three female teachers, a security guard and a member of the National Youth Service Corps. The kidnappers late last week made contact with the leadership of the community to place a ransom demand of twenty-five million naira. Reacting to the development; the Nigeria Union of Teachers is accusing the Rivers State Government of failing to take action to ensure the safe return of the teachers. State Chairman of the NUT, LUCKY NKPOGONE warned that if the teachers remain in captivity until tomorrow, the leadership of the union would call its members to withdraw their service and shut down all schools in protest in the state in protest.
The NUT Chairman, who spoke with correspondent CHINEDU IWUNNA on telephone, wondered why kidnappers would target teachers for abduction for ransom.
