The Rivers State University Teaching Hospital, RSUTH, has launched an awareness and screening campaign aimed at promoting the early detection and effective management of high blood pressure.
The initiative, tagged “Operation Check Your Blood Pressure, BP, and Show Your Doctor,” was flagged off at the Infectious Disease Unit Hall of the hospital.
Speaking at the event, the Chief Medical Director of RSUTH, Professor Chizindu Alikor, described the campaign as a timely health initiative designed to bring preventive healthcare closer to the people.
Professor Alikor stressed the importance of knowing one’s blood pressure, noting that early detection and appropriate medical management could help prevent serious health complications.
He urged members of the public to take advantage of the screening exercise, not only to know their blood pressure readings but also to seek medical attention where necessary.
Also speaking, the Head of Department, Boma Oyan, said high blood pressure could silently damage the body without obvious symptoms.
Oyan warned that leaving the condition unchecked could lead to serious complications, including stroke, heart attack and kidney damage.
She urged residents to take responsibility for their health by checking their blood pressure regularly and showing the results to their doctors.
Free blood pressure testing was also conducted during the event as the hospital encouraged members of the public to make regular blood pressure checks part of their preventive healthcare routine.
