The Chief Justice of Nigeria, Kudirat Kekere-Ekun, has said that artificial intelligence and other emerging technologies can support the administration of justice but cannot replace the constitutional role of judges in determining legal rights and obligations.
Justice Kekere-Ekun stated this at the 2026 Law Week of the Nigerian Bar Association, Lagos Branch, themed “Beyond Disruption: Redefining Legal Practice at the Intersection of Law, Technology and Justice.”
She noted that while technology is transforming legal practice, every innovation must be subjected to judicial scrutiny to ensure it complies with the Constitution, principles of fairness, and the rule of law.
The Chief Justice stressed that although artificial intelligence can enhance efficiency within the justice system, the responsibility for interpreting the law and delivering judicial decisions remains exclusively with the courts.
