Nigeria Receives 18 Repatriated Benin Artefacts from Switzerland

Nigeria has received 18 priceless Benin Kingdom artefacts returned from Switzerland, marking another milestone in the country’s efforts to recover its stolen cultural heritage.

The artefacts, including religious objects believed to be among the renowned Benin Bronzes looted from the ancient Benin Kingdom in the late 19th century, were formally handed over to the Federal Government at the National Museum in Lagos.

The Swiss government also returned five additional artefacts that had been seized in Switzerland, bringing the total number of repatriated items handed over during the ceremony.

The artefacts were officially received on behalf of the Federal Government by the National Commission for Museums and Monuments.

The return is part of ongoing international efforts to restore cultural treasures taken from Nigeria during the colonial era and reflects growing global support for the repatriation of looted African artefacts.
